The nomination is in recognition of the school's outstanding achievement in enhancing the provision of physical education and school sport. The winner was due to be announced at the International Centre in Telford, West Midlands, last night. Win or lose, Netherhall School and its new community sports centre has had a huge impact on Maryport already. Eight months after it opened, it is reaching the stage where almost every age group and organisation is using the facilities and it has recently joined forces with the NHS and JobCentre to get people on long-term incapacity benefit back to health. Manager Brian Taylor said candidates referred to the centre will get help with lifestyle choices, nutrition programmes and exercise or whatever they need. As well as that, the centre offers kayaking in the swimming pool, a fell walking group, spinning - aerobics on an exercise bike - a mountain bike group and plans are in the pipeline for a cycling group....

Nutrition, exercise can keep weight off

Q. For my New Year's resolution I want to lose at least 20 pounds. All my friends are telling me different things, some say run, others walk, some say Pilates or yoga, some say find a personal trainer, some say just take a weight lifting class or join Curves. I don't have much time during the day, but can find an hour or so to get this done. Which is the right path? A. This is probably the most popular question asked during this time of year. I first want to commend you for taking the steps necessary for better health and longevity. And despite the many choices that you have for weight loss, the answer is rather simple: "calories in" needs to be less than "calories out." Each of the types of exercise that you have listed above will help you to achieve your goal of weight loss because they will expend energy and that burns calories....

It's Visser's time to stand tall

Asked to describe his style of play on a questionnaire from Wake Forest's sports information department, Demon Deacons center Kyle Visser answered, "Elegant."Merriam-Webster defines that as "refined grace." But coach Skip Prosser hopes to use additional adjectives when talking about the 6-foot-11, 255-pound senior's performance this season.More than elegance, Wake needs efficiency, consistency, productivity and an aura of unwavering confidence from their only experienced post player. And Wake needs it starting Saturday, when it opens the season against James Madison at 2 p.m. in Winston-Salem.While producing some highlight moments, Visser's career has been "mercurial," to use Prosser's word. He started games early last year, played well for a spell, then lost confidence and sank into a reserve role.Though leading the Deacs in blocked shots with 40, he averaged just 5.0 points and 4.3 rebounds playing an average of 17 minutes a game....

Doping, an underhand method to enhance ones performance has spoiled the very character of the game and the players.

The (ab)use of drugs to enhance performance is a major threat to the health of an individual and healthy development of sports and it is contrary to the fair competition as it can confer unfair advantage on the user. Doping has come to sports get-together as an unwelcome guest and it is going to stay there. In their quest for gold and glory, sports persons now resort to short cuts and unfamiliar tactics even at their own peril. Drug abuse in sports is just one manifestation of the whole pill- popping problem our society faces. Over the years, people have been misled by media blitz that every malady can be solved by a pill, syrup or an ointment. Thus, it is not surprising that some sportspersons too, resort to pills and injections as shortcuts to success, as they dont understand that good genes, scientific coaching, proper nutrition and dedication to the task are what ultimately bring them success....

Twice a week, while other students settle in with books at the Rockefeller Library or lounge on the steps of Faunce House, eight Brown student volunteers discuss nutrition with a group of Providence-area middle school girls. The students, led by program coordinators Allison Barkley '07 and Bethany Allen '07, teach fitness and nutrition to girls aged 11 to 13 at Roger Williams Middle School. The program, called FitNut, is run by Project Health, a national nonprofit organization. The FitNut volunteers spend about an hour and 15 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday with the girls, participating in activities and playing games that focus on nutrition and fitness. At least 20 minutes of that time is designated for "get(ting) their heart rates going" by playing tag or basketball, Allen said....

Lynn Paulow column Sports nutrition advice for the older athlete
Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 1:15:33 PM by Blog57 Team
Every day I watch many older athletes or exercisers work religiously through their workouts. It is so commendable to see their commitment to exercise. Just recently I came across an article that had some good information about the nutritional needs for the older exerciser. Nancy Clark, a reputable nutrition counselor, has these thoughts about how the needs of an older athlete's needs differ from those of younger athletes. One hundred years ago, life expectancy was 42 years. Today, many of us will live twice as long. Our goal is to protect our good health, and one of the biggest nutrition concerns should be to eat quality calories from nutrient-dense and health-protective foods. These foods support top performance, enhance recovery from hard workouts and reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and other debilitating diseases....

SIMI VALLEY - With both incumbents deciding not to seek re-election, 10 candidates are on the ballot for two open seats on the Simi Valley school board, with most stressing support for teachers, communication with parents, safety and careful budgeting. Seven of the 10 list their occupations as either teacher or retired teacher, including Steven Gould, who served four years on the board until losing a re-election bid in 2004, Bob La Belle, who retired from his job as Royal High School principal in January, Jeanne Davis, Thurlow Partridge, Raymond Cruz, Tim Camarillo and Larry Kwiatkowski. The other three are Steven Lee Bloore, a certified hypnotherapist; Eric Lundstrom, a financial analyst; and Randy Sundeen, an attorney. La Belle and Kwiatkowski said they have decided not to campaign, and Kwiatkowski said he has withdrawn from the race....
