Socorro schools switch to milk bottles

Socorro Independent School District cafeterias have dumped cartons and begun serving milk in plastic bottles in an effort nutrition experts hope will increase consumption among students. The move away from cartons follows a small national trend, which shows that students at schools using the bottles drink more milk. "We've been trying to get the bottles to our schools for 10 years ... we're the first one's in the area to finally do so," said Debbie Devine, the director of child nutrition services in Socorro. "Our students have already been drinking and we have noticed a change in consumption already." The district began supplying the half-pint plastic bottles last week, and cafeterias by now should have exhausted their milk-carton supply and begun using the bottles. The bottles come in three presentations: 1 percent low fat, as well as low-fat chocolate and low-fat strawberry....

Nutritionist Joanne Lupton is busy, but finds time every day to leave her Texas A&M University office for a fitness walk. Surely Lupton could burn off at least a box of Milk Duds if she were to hang the plaques and awards lying along the wall in her office in the Kleberg Building on the West Campus of Texas A&M. Instead, she treads the long, empty hallways of her building's basement level, where it's cooler and less likely that a colleague will stop her for a chat - which would defeat the purpose. ....

USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) purchases a variety of high-quality food products each year for distribution by USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) for the national school lunch program, the school breakfast program, the summer food service program, the food distribution program on Indian reservations, the nutrition program for the elderly, the commodity supplemental food program and the emergency food assistance program. USDA also makes emergency purchases of commodities for distribution to victims of natural disasters. With today's announcement of USDA's intention to buy, FNS will survey potential recipients to determine how much product will be accepted for shipping....
