| Body-composition assessment in infancy: air-displacement ... | | Posted Tuesday, January 09, 2007 1:21:42 PM by Blog57 Team | | Background: A better understanding of the associations of early infant nutrition and growth with adult health requires accurate assessment of body composition in infancy. Objective: This study evaluated the performance of an infant-sized air-displacement plethysmograph (PEA POD Infant Body Composition System) for the measurement of body composition in infants. Design: Healthy infants (n = 49; age: 1.7?23.0 wk; weight: 2.7?7.1 kg) were examined with the PEA POD system. Reference values for percentage body fat (%BF) were obtained from a 4-compartment (4-C) body-composition model, which was based on measurements of total body water, bone mineral content, and total body potassium. Results: Mean (±SD) reproducibility of %BF values obtained with the PEA POD system was 0.4 ± 1.3%.... | |

| | | Nigeria: Nutrition Intervention is Key to Poverty Reduction - Grange | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 11:12:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | THE mainstreaming of nutrition intervention into programmes in the health, agriculture and other sectors of the economy has been recommended as a key operational change to scaling up towards establishing nutrition as an integral part of the first Millennium Development Goal, which aims to reduce poverty and hunger. President of the International Paediatric Association, Prof. Adenike Grange, who gave the recommendation last week in Lagos, observed that one of the gaps in the effort to reduce income poverty, was the non-improvement in the area of non-income poverty, that is, malnutrition and hunger. .... | |

| | | Robertson County reviews health-care options | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 3:17:46 AM by Blog57 Team | | Amanda Jones distinctly remembers her first frightening moment as a new mother: Her infant daughter, born one month premature, couldn't keep formula down. She recalled the worrisome questions that filled her mind. Was there something horribly wrong? Would the girl need a tube placed down her throat, like other premature babies, to be able to eat ? "It was bad," the young mother said Friday, remembering how alarming it was to watch her baby, Danielle Shoemake, vomit the contents of her bottle after every meal. Jones sought treatment toward the end of her pregnancy from the Robertson County Community Health Center in Hearne. The clinic is one of several regional reduced-cost health-care facilities run by the Brazos Valley Community Action Agency. The Franklin mother turned to them once again when Danielle was ill.... | |

| | | Breast-feeding and the workplace | | Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 7:19:26 AM by Blog57 Team | | For two years, federal health officials have tried to cajole more moms to breast-feed their infants, launching a nationwide ad campaign that likened the risks of formula feeding, in one TV spot, to riding a mechanical bull while pregnant. But the campaign has done little to help moms overcome one of the biggest barriers to breast-feeding -- the workplace. Federal and state lawmakers have declined in recent years to force companies to guarantee female employees a time and place to nurse or express milk at work, with business lobbyists successfully arguing that a one-size-fits-all approach isn't effective in the workplace. Yet voluntary incentives don't appear to be working. In eight years, only 53 Oregon employers -- most of them health organizations and government agencies -- have sought recognition from the state as a Breastfeeding Mother Friendly Employer.... | |

| | | Don't add to health care gap | | Posted Thursday, October 26, 2006 3:29:11 PM by Blog57 Team | | Michigan, like the rest of America, is plagued by intolerable health inequalities between whites and minority populations. Extensive research has documented that minorities have generally worse health, higher death rates and higher infant mortality rates, and are less likely to have access to care or to receive appropriate and effective care when they experience serious illness. And when one part of our population has poor access to health care, it tends to increase the cost of health care for all residents. High costs in turn may reduce the availability of important services, even for affluent patients. These problems are likely to get worse if Proposal 06-2 passes and affirmative action programs are eliminated. Existing health inequalities are related in part to differences in social circumstances between whites and minorities, including income, education, nutrition, environmental quality and housing.... | |

| | | Teach smart eating habits at young age | | Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 11:05:03 AM by Blog57 Team | | Feeding your child can be one of the biggest challenges in parenthood. Healthful eating habits should start when your child is an infant, as babies learn about flavors first through amniotic fluid and breast milk. According to research findings, foods that are eaten during pregnancy and lactation can influence a baby's willingness to accept those foods later on in life. Breast-fed babies may be less picky eaters than formula-fed infants. Research suggests that lifelong food preferences are set during the first three years of life, and it's easier to establish good habits from childhood than to break bad ones later. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, children who are overweight are much more likely to be overweight or obese as adults. Children should enjoy full-fat foods such as whole milk and cheese at around the age of 2, and should enjoy lower-fat choices thereafter.... | |
