A few months ago, as noted here, the Coca-Cola Company announced that it was going to introduce a new beverage, something that the folks at Coke have done with rather more regularity than success over the years. New Coke was a bust on the order of the Edsel, Susan B. Anthony dollar, and Kevin Federline's musical career, but that experience only seemed to invigorate the company, which has run cherry-flavored Coke, lime-flavored Coke, and pretty much everything but ammonia-flavored Coke up the flagpole. But even in the context of all this product diversification, their latest new drink is a real head-turner, and even eye-roller. The new drink is called Enviga, a name so blatant in it's attempt to call the word "invigorate" to your mind that you'd think the high-priced marketing consultants who came up with it would be suitably embarrassed....

_ Children in major Chinese cities are now 6 centimeters taller than they were 30 years ago as a result of better nutrition, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday. It said the results of a Health Ministry survey, released earlier in the day, show the average height of 6-year-old boys rose from 112.3 cm in 1975 to 118.7 cm in 2005, while that of girls reached 117.7 cm, 6.2 cm more than in 1975. The survey, which has been conducted by ministry every 10 years since 1975, covered almost 140,000 children in urban and suburban areas of Beijing, Harbin, Xi'an, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Guangzhou and Kunming. Xinhua said taller children are posing problems for city transport authorities. In June this year, Beijing's municipal government had to revise the height under which kids get a free bus ride from 1.1 meters high to 1.2 meters....

Denial of basic socio-economic rights, such as the right to work, health and education, is a grave danger to democracy, and the legitimacy of government hinges on its genuine determination to ensure that the basic necessities of life are available and accessible to all within its borders. Ghana is often held up as an example of an African country where democracy and human rights are respected and upheld. ....

DILG mandates LGUs to support nutrition programs

Tacloban City (6 November) -- As the Local Government Code of 1991 empowers Local Government Units (LGUs) to provide basic social services to include health ad nutrition services, the Department of Interior or Local Government or DILG requests LGUs to submit budgetary estimates intended for nutrition and related programs for a period of five years. This is the gist of the Memorandum Circular No. 2006-113 issued by the Department of Interior and Local Government in August, this year. The memorandum is one important way of determining the critical role of the local government units in contributing to the success of nutrition programs at the local levels, through the resources allocated for their implementation. This will likewise help achieve the goal of the Medium Term Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (MTPPAN) for 2006 - 2010....

With many divergent opinions about weight loss diets, it's comforting to know that this diet is the result of carefully considered clinical research by internationally recognised scientists. In collaboration with CSIRO health and nutrition researchers and co-author, CSIRO Nutrition Clinic Manager Dr Peter Clifton, Dr Noakes spent several years developing this protein-based, low-fat, weight-loss plan that differs from many diets in that it also provides all the nutrients needed for a healthy lifestyle....
